When Equipment Is Mistreated

After so many problems with truck 1 (the one the 2 1/2 year employee had who left) I started checking things out. Last weekend, 16 hours in the shop, most of which was truck 1. I was told the booster would not turn and was popping the breaker. On Saturday last weekend, I started with checking the diffusers and impellers on the booster. I found one set welded together from excessive heat, many diffusers where broken or cracked and getting ready to break so I replaced everything that looked suspect. The 12 v FB was acting up so is was hard to do much on the truck without issue except down streaming and the Honda motor on the skid was starting to run a bit strange as well.

The booster ran well in my testing though did need some TLC in priming but might drop off at any time and need priming again. This will get replaced and the old (three months) booster will get all new parts and be used as a back up.

Yesterday I replaced the 12 V Fatboy with a 5850 (Hank's suggestion). We don't use it that often so I thought I'd give it a try since he has had good luck over the years.

My reason for the post is to show what lack of proper rinsing and ALWAYS being in a hurry can do to the equipment. This hurry up attitude is now costing close to 1K, not including my time. If we added that in, it would be well over $2500. I would rather do something else on the weekends. My employees get a break!

If our past and present employees knew how much effort was involved in running our business they might (probably not) view things differently. I'm working long before they show up and well after they are gone.

I went out on a job over the weekend to clean the roof of an auto service station after hours. I noticed the Fatboy pressure seemed a little lower than normal but I just continued with the job to completion. While rinsing the pump after the job I noticed it was also making some noise. Sure enough the pump head was leaking and corroded pretty bad. Was it perfect timing that the pump was going out while I was using it??? I discovered the spray valve was also leaking in which no one informed me of. Again, was it perfect timing??? I find myself frequently reminding the crew to notify me immediately of any broken or wearing equipment or parts or any depleted supplies.

You didn't know that you are also a mind reader, crystal ball reader, and able to know what part they are talking about even thought they change the name every day! Hell, all I want is the ability to change "O" rings in the field and take care of equipment. That should be too much to ask for!
