Art,

We offer the installation of GutterStuff and cleanouts only. It's up to the customer. Curious... where did you get those numbers?

We offer gutter cleaning, but don't offer any type of gutter guard installation. Ive been considering adding this service, but just not sure how profitable it would be. These are the guards I was considering. buymbs.com/p-3405-us-aluminum-inc-shur-flo-gutter-guard.aspx They are similiar to Leaf Relief.

These are the screens I use. I get 150' in a box for $85.00 +tax. They slide under the shingles and I zip screw them in. They work very good as long as the gutter has the correct pitch .

Maybe a hour, but I did a job with a new roof last week, What a bitch. The roofer went by the book. He was a GAF Master Elite contractor. I couldn't get the under course to lift up. It really gave me a hard time getting the screens in. Most jobs go easy with these screens. Alum screens are more reasonably priced then some of the other stuff. You need to use 1/4" zip screws to hold them in.

I use Leaf Relief gutter protectors @ $2.00/ft to purchase (my price). I can sell installed for up to $12/ft, depending on how cut up the house is. They go on easy, are not visible from the ground, come in 10' lengths, and nothing gets in them. These are the only ones I will install. However, I just found another no name brand very similar but at half the cost that I will be trying shortly.

Cleaning out the roof edge gutters is the easy part,..the pain is when the downspouts are plugged and need to be torn apart,..that's where you earn your money with gutter,...overall though,..it is decent hourly money.

We service gutters regularly within 1/2 hour of our local. We put out maybe 50 yard signs for it in November. We sell the service on contract for 2x a year, early June and early December, 1x early December or 2 x in fall etc. the problem we find is its situational. If they have pin oaks and certain other trees they need it in the spring too. Another issue is gutter protectors many times still need a cleaning once in a while. But if we try to sell an install it's hard to sell the Maintanance with them. And yet another issue is the market for installers is fundamentally flawed. (Big surprise right?). The flaw is that depending on the surrounding vegetation and the roof design not all gutter protectors will work on all homes, but gutter protector install companies are usually tied to a single product. So customers are left without the options and information they need to make an informed decision. Also to guys saying filters and stuff like that do you install the foam inserts? I ask because The foam inserts are really good at growing moss and we are good at getting paid to remove them after the first year or 2. We love when people install them and we get a call saying they are clogging the gutters rip them out. Just as much pay to rip them out as to put them in. Also those Basket strainers on the downspout hole we just through away when we find them. They are many time the only thing causing the gutter to clog. Our recommendation to our customers Is to hire regular cleaning maintenance from us or a landscaper, tree guy, roofer etc. and when they get a new roof or gutters to upgrade to the 5 inch instead of the standard 3 inch. It lets more go down the hole and out the pipe.

I got certified for leaf relief. Good money! Alcoa guarantees it. I used to install it until one day.Years ago. Before I tell you why I stopped, lets go over the 4 types of gutter guard first.

The 4 types of gutter guard:

Solid cover.

flat guard,

foam,

and this other one, the worst one. It's nothing but a huge pipe cleaner, simmilar to a pipe cleaner used to clean tobacco pipes. It is the worst one.

Now what do you want to offer your customer? Maintanance free guard right???

well there is no perfect guard. We will start from the bottom and work up. The pipe cleaner guard is worthless. Debris fall into it, has to be blown out not maintanance free. It wil protect the downspouts but not forever. I put foam and flat into the same catagory. They are both flat guard. Foam is worse than metal or vinyl flat guard, but the tops of this guard must be blown off atleast once a year. Leaf relief has this in the small print in the contract I would give them from leaf relief. Then there is the solid guard, gutter shutter, gutter monster, gutter helmet. To name a few. This is the closest to maintanance free. The problem with this guard. steep pitched roofs, durring heavy rains the guard doesnt work at all. What I mean is the rain doesnt go into the gutters, the water flys right off and hits the ground.

My oppinion is solid cover is the closest thing to maintanance free.

I educate the customer, about what we have seen. over the years about guard. Any guard is better than nothing, even the lil bird cages in the downspout outlets Bill mentioned. It will buy you some time, before they need to be cleaned again. The bird cages, if you put them in, dont push them down too far. That lessens how long they will work. Everything I just said about guard above is what I tell people that ask. We have one, it is cheaper than the big companies and works the same way. Easy grand in a half a day!!! Without a guarantee you cant get a G.

The downside to gutter guard. You dont have someone on your roof every year looking for soft spots on the roof, flashing, gutter issues. I tell whoevers asks that too.

We pretty much use gutter cleaning as an avenue into more business and new neighborhoods. I turned about 50% of the gutter cleaning estimates I went on into additional cleanings. Most of the time it was a roof cleaning.

I currently offer gutter cleaning and am considering expanding into this.

I install Extreme Gutter guards. They have a couple different designs. One that is a screen, that is good if there are pine trees or maples around, and another that is good if there are no trees, or maybe oaks. It is true, having guards does not make the gutter system maintenance free. All guards need to be cleaned off. I would say the worst guards out there are the gutter helmet type. If these get dirty, which they do, on the outside water will just run over the edge. We are always cleaning these darn things. As far as the cost, much more than what the survey says for screens. Of course the ones I use have a patent on the design and a 20 year warranty.
