5 GPM PW vs 8 GPM PW
Permalink

Need to add a bigger PW to the van this winter and i have a few issues. Room for a Pw is not the problem as I'm removing my old PW. The problem I have is the size of my water tanks. I currently  have 2-35 gallon drums so approx 70 gallons total. I plan on taking one of the 35 gallon drums out and replacing it with a 55 gallon drum but that is all the room I have. even though the van is an extended verion van i have used every inch of it as i can . So here is my issue and some of you PW gurus may have a simple answer. I do very little housewashing so the way I do it now is I apply with my all-flo and I rinse with my Pw and the Pw is supplied by homeowners faucet. I was still planning on using homeowners water but using the 70 gallons as a buffer for the bigger machine. My plan is to pipe the tanks together and using hudson float valves on both tanks. But if my math is right i will have only so much on the trigger time before I run out of water. Here in Nh most of the wells put out 4-8 GPM, so if i use and average of 5gpm and i use a 8gpm PW my 70 gallon  tanks will give me approx 20 mins of trigger time. going to be calling Bob at PT today but I want to here it from you guys 1st. I also want the 8 gpm Pw not the 5GPM PW as I want to increase the speed of housewashing , because one of the reasons I dont push house washing is because Im to slow at it and there is a better ROI on roof cleaning. Im not Interested in a booster pump because I now only use fatboy as backup and I dont want any more electric pumps. Im an all-flow guy for life.

Brian I have an 8gpm for sale. I think you would need at least 100 gallon tank for either set up though. I use a 100 gallon tank on the 5gpm machine and a 250 on the 8 gpm machine.

Mike why are you selling the 8gpm ? I can get to 90 gallons and that is it, so it sounds like I need to go with a 5 GPM and that is that. Mike how is your 5 GPM machine for downstreaming and house washing, either way a 5 GPM machine will be a ton faster than my old machine. And with any PW whether it is 5 or 8 GPM , is it really pulling 5-8 GPM . I would think that nozzle would slow down the gpm ?

Dam, my high school education left me a little short in the brains dept.....as a matter of fact i never saw my diploma, they called my name and handed me it rolled up. I just asked my mother the other day if she still had it and if she ever opened it. All she recalls is that after i handed it to her and i went off to drink with my friends for the night. The paper maybe blank and the high school was just being polite buy calling my name.

I'd go with the 5gpm. Washing houses using well water, a small buffer and a 8gpm machine is no fun. You'll spend more time waiting on the water to fill back up than you will washing. With town or city water, you wouldn't have a problem. I see a lot of residential properties that have 1/2" cpvc or copper plumbing for outside spigots. This greatly reduces the flow of water and you will often only see 3.5-4.5 gpm flow with an 8gpm well pump. If you do go with an 8gpm machine, I'd recommend carrying an extra supply hose so you can connect to 2 water spigots when needed.

I just learned something I did not think about. I keep 200 ft of garden hose on the truck and I nerver thought about hooking up to both spigots. But the only problem I see with that is the potential of burning up the well pump or running the well dry. I never kept track of how much water i use during roof cleaning or house washing. Thanks for the idea Chris, and just in time because I was going to start my tanks install today and will need to change my connections that i had planned. I really want the 8gpm machine but it may not work with my set up. Thanks again Chris.. now I just need to figure out how to steal yiur rig and keep it with out getting caught.

Lol. You're welcome Brian.
I've never had a problem with burning up a well pump or running a well dry. We run 2 5.5gpm pumps on both trucks and always have 2 supply hoses hooked up. I would be more concerned with the pump continuing to cycle on/ off, just like a delevan burning up pressure switches. This is the case when installing a home irrigation system. You want to size your nozzles and amount of heads to have your well pump continue to run and not cycle on/off.
