Purple Power From Advance Auto

Was using Purple Power for the last several years,..shipped free from Advance Auto. Was a great deal,...till they stopped the free shipping, Ha, Ha.

Turned out for the better though,..I then used my brain like I should have to begin with,..I bought 5 gallons of Glycol Ether EB.  All I can say is WOW,...wish I would have done that years ago.  I can make a REALLY good gutter cleaner for about the same cost as the PP was,..and mine works better.

2 Quarts in a 5 gallon bucket fill the rest with water,..add about 8 oz. of dish soap for cling and wetting. Mix it really well. About a 10% butyl based gutter cleaner that works very well.

I originally added some Hydroxide for kick,..but it's not needed for gutter cleaning.

The best part about having the Glycol Ether pure is,..you can adjust it up or down,...but mostly UP,..Ha, Ha,...I cleaned some gutters this past Fall in cold temps that would have been a total PITA,..but,..I bumped the percentage, and worked very well. The funny thing is,..that I can't figure out is why it doesn't seem to attack the paint in the higher percentage.  At a guess,..I was using around a 30% solution at one point,..but I wasn't spraying it,..I was "dip" brushing it,...I was worried about the paint on the gutter.  As I was working along,..the streaks were coming off with ease,...and I looked in the bucket and the liquid was only turning black,..not white,..told that minimal paint,..if any was being removed.

Shipped to the door $138.00  from the Chemistry Store.  From memory it comes out to around $20 a bucket of regular,..very effective  gutter cleaner.

I quit using PP and Super Clean due to paint removal. I really interested in what you are doing, especially when you said, "The funny thing is,..that I can't figure out is why it doesn't seem to attack the paint in the higher percentage." We have been using Elimination from ACR Products for years. Whatever I do I have to make it idiot proof!

Yea Brett,..even though it removes the black streaks like nothing I've ever used,..it hasn't yet removed paint,...like I said,..the dip bucket solution was just turning black assuming it's from the black streak from the gutters.

Just started using it back at the end of August,..I'm sure in very high temps it would remove paint,.... Just seems like a more adjustable solution as far as percentages go. I did really bad old gutters,..and I even told the customer the paint may come off,...but they were so heavily streaked that anything would look better,....I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. I haven't had to use Magic Erasers on gutters since I started using it.

From everything I've read about Glycol Ether EB,..seems to defy logic why it's working on the black streaks yet not attacking the paint,..at least not that I've seen yet?

My own opinion on why it's not removing the paint is:..the combination of the Glycol Ether along with the NAOH that comes along with most of these type cleaners makes a more aggressive cleaner,....yet Sodium Hydroxide doesn't clean black streaks,...and all it's really doing is attacking the paint?? Just a theory,...albeit a weak theory,..it's all I got.

A good find! I'd like to add gutter scrubbing back.

Yea,.I'm weird about getting the gutters clean,..and from what I've seen with this so far is very impressive. It's the main product in most of the effective gutter cleaners. For each job,.. I usually have a bucket of 10% strength,..along with a gallon of pure Glycol Ether EB,..Commonly labeled (2-Butoxyethanol)

The 10% is a good starting point,.....when I go much stronger,..I prefer the dip brush method,...I think this is more economical,..and when you get into higher strengths spraying,..not sure what it may do to other surfaces it may land on. I personally think it would be fine,...but until I get some more field time with it I won't know.

Hello Jeff, Do you make this up as needed on the job or do you keep some ready to use? I am wondering how long the shelf life is if you made a few buckets of this so it is always ready to open up and use.
Thank you.

Hey Chris,..if you're still here, Ha, Ha. I mix a few buckets at a time,..it is as stable as any thing else. I still do as I mentioned above.

Pressure works in Richmond sells a product called gutter clean that is extremely affective at removing black streaks on gutters and the cost is minimal. We're talking $5-$10 per bucket that'll clean an entire 2,000 sqft house. We clean the whole house first, then come back and clean the gutters(when we have a gutter job), then a final rinse. Works great every time.

So you clean the house first,......bypassing the gutters on the first pass,..and then come back and clean the gutters? Why not just clean the gutters at the same time? Too much time added,. hose dragging and also extra rinsing.

100% correct Jeff! We do the same thing. We make more money doing gutter brightening than we do with house washes by cleaning this way. We have been using elimination from ACR for years. It works so we stick with it!
